Alcohol abuse can affect mental health later in life
Alcohol abuse and binge drinking can have an adverse effect on an individual's mental health some 20 years later, a new study
has shown.
According to research conducted by experts at the University of Turku, the University of Helsinki and the National Institute
for Health and Welfare in Finland, midlife alcohol health risks extend to an increased likelihood of suffering from dementia
later in life, online resource Sify reports.
The experiment found that both people consuming excessive amounts of the substance - and those abstaining from it - have a
greater chance of suffering from some sort of cognitive impairment than those who drink in moderation.
Specialists found that drinking the equivalent alcoholic volume of a bottle of wine at least once monthly is "an independent
risk factor" when it comes to such problems.
This comes after Drinkaware stated that less than half of the British adult population is able to equate alcohol units to
actual drinks.
