Alcohol abuse "would not be cut by lowering drinking age"

Alcohol abuse among students at universities in the US would not be reduced by lowering the minimum drinking age, new
research has stated.
According to a study conducted by experts at the Louisiana State University School of Public Health, calls from some college
professors that cutting the age at which people can legally consume the substance would have the knock-on effect of curbing
binge drinking are wide of the mark.
The investigation, which is published in the Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, stated that the idea of lowering this
benchmark to 18 from the current age of 21 would represent a "radical experiment" that is unlikely to work.
This comes after 135 heads of universities signed the Amethyst Initiative, founded in 2008, to show their support for this
measure, as they feel it would help breed a trend of moderation.
Meanwhile, Alcohol Focus Scotland stated recently that alcohol abuse at a young age can lead to a range of health problems in
later life.
