New Report Demonstrates The Effectiveness of Minimum Unit Pricing

A recent study published in the Royal College of Physicians’ journal Clinical Medicine demonstrates that minimum unit pricing is an "exquisitely targeted" policy for the most dangerous drinkers.

The report from the University of Southampton has found that introducing a minimum unit price (MUP) of 50p per unit would hardly affect moderate alcohol drinkers whilst severely impacting those with harmful consumption habits, making it a highly effective way of targeting the most hazardous drinkers.

It estimated that the introduction of an MUP of 50p/unit would only cost low-risk drinkers an average of 0.03% of their annual income, and the vast majority of these low-risk drinkers (89%) would pay "nothing extra at all." Yet it would have a much greater impact on high-risk, harmful drinkers, who would see a financial cost approximately 400 times greater in order to maintain their previous level of alcohol consumption.
