Finland: Health authorities say alcohol consumption is increasing
According to the National Institute for Health and Welfare and the National Supervisory Authority for Welfare and Health (Valvira), private
imports of alcohol to Finland increased by about 7% in the first quarter of 2011 from the corresponding period in 2010. Restaurant sales
increased by 3.7%, and retail sales in consumer goods shops by 7.4%.
The 7% increase in private imports corresponds to 0.1 litres of 100% alcohol per person a year. Alcohol sales in Finland increased by 2.6% in
terms of 100% alcohol in the first quarter of 2011 from the corresponding period in 2010.
The increase in alcohol-related harm follows the trend in domestic total consumption. The most effective way to stop the increase in total
alcohol consumption and of alcohol-related harm that started at the end of 2010 is to raise alcohol tax in Finland.
